Oral Habits

Thumb Sucking

Many children suck their thumbs and fingers as infants and most will outgrow the habit by age four.  This will not cause tooth damage.  As the permanent teeth erupt, intense thumb sucking can cause permanent structural damage.  As parents, we can keep those little fingers busy so they stay out of the child's mouth.  Distraction and substitution:  Dr. Kucera can offer many suggestions to break the thumb sucking/pacifier habit.

Teens and their Teeth

Peer pressure often impacts the care of our teens teeth.  Teens can have a variety of oral health problems that can have serious consequences to our teens healthy smiles.  Here are some common challenges teens consider.

Eating Disorders

Bulimia and anorexia are very destructive eating disorders that can impact our teens oral health.  Bulimia and anorexia can lead to inflamed gums, erosion of tooth enamel, cavities and tooth loss.  Tooth erosion is caused by the repeated exposure to stomach acid.  This erosion is often visible during teens regular exam and cleaning.  We can help to customize a treatment plan to help reduce the amount of enamel erosion and dental decay.

Mouth Piercing/Tongue Piercing

Most teens are not aware of the risks involved in mouth piercings.  Jewelry in the lips and tongue can chip teeth and crack enamel,  collect plaque, cause serious infections like Ludwig's angina, where bacteria from the piercing enters the blood stream, causing  the tongue to swell and the risk of blocking the airway.  There is the possibility of a allergic reaction to the metal in the jewelry.  Speech may be impeded as well as our teens chewing ability.

Smokeless Tobacco

Chewing tobacco, also called snuff, a quid, a chaw, a plug, smokeless tobacco is a form of tobacco and contains nicotine.  Nicotine is an addictive drug that makes the blood vessels narrow and speeds up the heart.  All tobaccos can cause cancer.  Chewing tobacco can cause cancer in the mouth, gum tissue, and cheeks and at a very young age.  It also makes your breath smell bad and numbs your taste buds.  JUST SAY NO TO TOBACCO.
